What does Bahamas Grid Company do?

Bahamas Grid Company (BGC) owns, operates, maintains, and upgrades the electricity transmission and distribution system that serves New Providence. Our job is to keep the grid safe, reliable, and resilient by maintaining substations, power lines, underground cables, and other infrastructure that delivers electricity to homes and businesses. We also manage new grid connections, system upgrades, outage restoration on the transmission and distribution network, and long-term grid modernization projects.

Is BGC the same as BPL?

No. BGC and BPL are separate organizations with different responsibilities.

  • BGC is responsible for the transmission and distribution grid infrastructure in New Providence.
  • BPL is responsible for electricity generation, customer accounts, billing, and customer-facing communications.
While we work closely together to serve the electric consumers, we perform different functions within the electricity sector. In regard to the distribution of electricity in New Providence is concern BPL is responsible for all customer facing interactions – billing, issues resolution, meter installation, etc. BPL is responsible for the “front of the house” function while BGC is responsible for the “back of the house” transmission and distribution functions of operating and maintain the grid in New Providence.

Does BGC generate electricity?

No. BGC does not generate electricity.

Our responsibility is to operate and maintain the transmission and distribution grid that transports electricity from BPL generator power plants to our consumers. Electricity generation is performed by BPL and other licensed generators.

What is BGC doing to improve reliability?

Improving reliability is our top priority. BGC has invested significantly in strengthening the transmission system and is now focused on addressing legacy distribution infrastructure challenges. Our work includes:

  • Increasing maintenance and system repairs.
  • Modernizing the grid to improve resilience against storms, equipment failures, and growing electricity demand.
  • Reinvesting millions of dollars annually through capital improvement programmes to increase grid reliability and to meet future forecasted load growth demand.
  • Upgrading substations and transmission facilities.
  • Repairing underground and overhead cable faults and other ageing infrastructure.
  • Proactive vegetation management and infrared system scanning.
  • Leverage our access to specialized international contractors and technical resources to accelerate high-priority grid repairs.
These initiatives are aimed at reducing both the frequency and duration of outages while building a stronger, more reliable grid for the future.

Does BGC operate throughout The Bahamas?

No. BGC's current transmission and distribution license covers only New Providence. Our responsibility is the electricity transmission and distribution grid serving New Providence.

Who do I call when my power goes off?

If your power goes off, you should contact BPL's outage reporting channels, as BPL remains responsible for customer outage reporting and customer restoration communications. BPL also provides BGC with contracted emergency support services to identify and repair faults on the transmission and distribution system. However, BPL is the primary customer contact for outage reporting, emergencies, claims, complaints, and restoration updates.
