Comprehensive Energy Reform Document Issued
A comprehensive Energy Reform document issued by Office of The Prime Minister – The Bahamas discusses how the PPP that created Bahamas Grid Company to upgrade the grid and maintain it for 25+ years is a ‘core strategy for achieving investment targets without compromising fiscal sustainability’.
What We Do
At Bahamas Grid Company, the wellbeing of the grid infrastructure on New Providence is our focus. To ensure that our system functions properly, we work in the following areas.
Restore
Access to reliable and resilient power is a must for modern communities. As of late July 2024, we have started to provide overhead and underground line crews, when requested by BPL, to restore power to communities around New Providence when supply is interrupted.
Upgrade
Starting in the Fall of 2024, the Bahamas Grid Company will conduct a significant upgrade project to improve the transmission and distribution system of New Providence.
These are foundational upgrades that will result in greater power reliability and affordability for many years to come.
Maintain
Once the foundational upgrades are complete, Bahamas Grid will continue to systematically fix the areas of the grid that need it the most and perform routine maintenance on the rest.
Also, it is expected from time to time that we will plan and implement additional upgrade initiatives and major construction projects to accommodate significant new generation or new loads.
What Is the Electric Grid?
A robust and up-to-date infrastructure system is a necessary backbone of modern life.
The electric grid is what connects our homes and offices to power generation sources, so that we have reliable access to power all the time. The grid is most commonly designed as a centralized system, so that every customer who is on the grid is connected in some way to all the generation sources that are also connected to it.
The electric grid consists of three main types of assets: the transmission system, the distribution system and substations. Bahamas Grid Company manages all three.
Transmission System
Transmission lines carry power at high voltages across large distances. It’s what lets power generated on the west side of New Providence to efficiently reach homes on the east side of the island.
Distribution System
Overhead distribution lines are smaller poles and wires that bring lower-voltage power to homes and businesses. You may see a lot of these in your neighborhood. Sometimes, the distribution wires are buried underground, in which case the only thing you may see are ground-mounted utility boxes on street corners.
Substations
Substations are situated around the grid to serve important safety functions. They step down power before it enters neighborhoods and they are equipped to protect power quality from external disturbances.
